When the first UFC event aired on pay-per-view TV back in 1993, it has drawn a surprising amount of people to the screens. It was well promoted beforehand, as the event that will pit eight fighters of different martial arts against each other to see which style is the most effective in minimal-rules conditions (no biting, no eye-gouging) that were as close as possible to actual street fights – but few people could predict the gigantic franchise that will grow out of it eventually and that will turn “mixed martial arts” into a household term.
The events that took place that November in the octagon ring were the brainchild of Art David Rorion Gracie and Robert Meyrowitz – even though that there were already some matches between fighters from different styles, this was the first time that it was the actual focus of the event – it was as much a battle of styles as it was a battle of fighters.

Interest in this fight is of course also fueled by the fact that this marks Couture’s return to the UFC, after a well-publicized feud.
